Racism and Suicide
by Kevin Caruso
The United States has had an ugly history of mistreatment of many people, which included the
legalized kidnapping, forced labor, and torture -- which was known as slavery -- of many blacks.
I cannot imagine how many "slaves" attempted suicide or died by suicide because of the severe mental and physical abuse that they were forced to endure.
And the legalized mistreatment of blacks continued with outrageous segregation laws, which were designed to deny blacks most of the basic rights and freedoms that non-blacks enjoyed.
American Indians have also been mistreated and lied to from the moment that the "settlers" set foot on the continent.
Numerous other groups have been severely mistreated throughout our history.
And African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Asian-Americans, Arab-Americans, and numerous other groups, deal with racism on a daily basis in present day America.
Racism stems from ignorance -- and all racists are ignorant.
And this ignorance can manifest itself in discrimination, intolerance, hate, and even violence.
Mistreatment because of racism can lead to depression.
And depression is the number one cause for suicide.
If you are suffering from depression or are suicidal because of racism, please go to Suicide.org and take action.
And please remember that racists - which would include anyone who mistreats or discriminates against people in any way because of their race - are extremely ignorant.
And there is never an excuse for racism - never.
God bless you.
Take care,
Kevin Caruso
